The Spectrum & Moods of the Poems
I did not sketch a blueprint or etch the boxes or categories before I started to write poetry. But in retrospect, when I tried to figure out what the hundreds of poems that had been created were all about, I found that I could broadly put them in six boxes. This is the genesis of the six categories that have been given names of birds …after all, poetry is, mostly, imagination and fantasy flying high like the soaring bird!
Categories
potpourri of poems on people, thoughts and things
Colourful Peacock
The most spectacular of birds is of course the colourful peacock. Here, I have used the imagery of the peacock to symbolize variety. Poems inspired by random thoughts on things and people we see in our lives like the door or the rag-picker, and common experiences like examination or conferences have been placed under the multi-coloured plumage of the amazing peacock. Colourful Peacock poems present an interesting potpourri of verse.
the many moods of relationships
Craving Swan
Many of my poems are about relationships and evoke many moods- points on a continuum from peace, bliss and rhapsody to hurt: an all-encompassing search for love, a longing for togetherness…. tender feelings, excitement, fear of separation, conflict, steadfast commitment, empathy, hurt, pain, betrayal, indignation and dismay! This cluster of poems has been grouped as Craving Swan Poems keeping the imagery of the swan that symbolizes grace, beauty, devotion, love, fidelity, purity, partnership and peace.
connectedness with nature and environment
Magical Phoenix
Nothing can renew itself as Nature! Poems about nature and its marvel come under the category of Magical Phoenix the mythical bird that can grow and recreate itself from its own (predecessor’s) ashes; the bird that symbolizes resurrection and renewal. Poems under this category talk of the qualities of nature, its beauty, its inexorable might and fury and about how our lives are intricately linked with nature and our environment.
in moods of reflection and introspection
Seeking Flamingo
Quite a number of my poems are reflective and introspective. They are also exploratory: questing, questioning, analysing; ferreting deep into -feelings, thoughts, decisions, relationships, human nature, meaning and purpose of life and even destiny. Such poems are placed under the umbrella of Seeking Flamingo. Flamingos represent elegance and equipoise or balance and like the flamingo that digs deep into the waters yet remains perfectly balanced, deep exploration would achieve inner balance and vitality. And so, these poems help to gain deeper understandings and harmony.
inspired by social concerns and mores
Talking Parrot
Some of my poems are triggered by events and happenings in society. They raise questions and ruffle thought in the hope that society at large, would find answers and these poems would serve a social purpose. They reflect both individual reactions and popular sentiment. Some poems raise an alarm to inequity, exploitation and question some age-old social traditions and practices that seem rather unfair today. This genre of poems is called Talking Parrot – parrots being social and talkative birds, these poems draw inspiration from the parrot that symbolizes being most mindful of what is said and represents the true power of the spoken word…. "If you have discovered a truth, tell it first to a parrot! Every new truth needs an insistent repetition.” – Mehmet Murat Ildan
in moods of Philosophy, Universality & Service
Wise Owl
Wise Owl poems raise and try to find answers to philosophical questions like, What is the difference between love and wisdom? What is prosperity? Does God reside in the temple? What do we all wait for? What do we seek? This set of poems relate to all matters that are universal, altruistic and have Service as a purpose, The owl is of course the best bird to represent this category. An owl has traditionally symbolized knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition. The owl was a symbol for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and strategy. According to myth, an owl sat on Athena's blind side, so that she could see the whole truth.
Moods
The poems reflect myriad moods…. Each poem is riveted in a mood or two. And the spectrum is broad and colourful too!
